Virtually ALL brand new stringed instruments ARE NOT "setup", meaning the bridge and nut ARE NOT reshaped and lowered so that the strings are lower and the instrument is actually playable.
This 'setup' is done by a trained luthier to get a new instrument easier to play.
A new player using a 'high string height' 'hard to play' instrument has 2 strikes against them because of that.
Many school orchestra players are struggling with un-setup or poorly setup stringed instruments.
Get at least a basic setup on your instrument.
Setup prices below are for instruments bought here at FMI, slightly higher for instruments brought in to us for setups.
Basic Setups get your bass action lowered for general bass playing. This is good for all kinds of music playing and will also allow you to get into bluegrass, rockabilly, and orchestral if you wish.
The action cannot be lowered enough for a real smooth lowered playing action without doing the fingerboard work though, so if you want a real smooth playing bass, easiest on your fingering hand, you should order the "pro setups"
If you want to play jazz the lower jazz setup is required so that you have a faster lower action.
